The Women’s Association’s Youth Community Service Award Program has been the organization’s most visible community effort through the years. Begun in 1980 as an idea of Carol Wolf, 1979-80 president, it was designed to reward Island students. The first award was a $75 savings account earned by Peggy Carey, a junior at May River Academy.
By 1984 a pre-teen award of $100 and a teen award of $200 were presented. In 1986 the amount jumped to $500 and remained there until recent times, when it was raised again. Until 1994 the Youth Awards were given to students in various grades, from sixth graders to high school seniors.
In over 30 years of Youth Awards, the program has morphed to recognize local outstanding graduating high school seniors who excel at community service. The number and amount of awards presented each year depends on the amount of money available in the WAHHI treasury at the end of the fiscal year.
Well over 100 students have been recognized since the program’s inception in 1980, and thousands of dollars have been awarded.
These monetary awards recognize the recipients’ community service.
To apply for a Youth Award, students must fill out an application and submit it before the due date each year, usually in early February. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited High School Program or Home School Program within the geographical boundaries of WAHHI.
