WAHHI Grant Recipients & Youth Award Winners

Founded in 1961, The Women’s Association of Hilton Head Island is an influential group of 750+ women who are active in civic, cultural and philanthropic activities in the Bluffton and Hilton Head community.

In May 2018, WAHHI awarded six grants to local nonprofits including:

The Children’s Center,

Volunteers in Medicine,

Family Promise,

Special Olympics South Carolina,

The Literacy Center,

 The Children’s Relief Fund.

Additionally, WAHHI recognized outstanding community service of five local high school seniors with financial awards.

In over 30 years of Youth Awards, the program has morphed to recognize local outstanding graduating high school seniors who excel at community service. The number and amount of awards presented each year depend on the amount of money available in the WAHHI treasury at the end of the fiscal year.

Well over 100 students have been recognized since the program’s inception in 1980, and thousands of dollars have been awarded.

The Youth Community Service Awards were presented to:

Kalaylah Chisolm – Hilton Head Island High School,

Meredith Inglis – Hilton Head Christian Academy,

Elizabeth Rhoads – Bluffton High School,

Audrey Robinson – Hilton Head Christian Academy

Madeline Wallin – Bluffton High School.

May 22, 2018 Luncheon Highlights

New York Times Bestselling Author, Anne Hillerman joined us May 22, 2018.

At the Sonesta Resort, we had a “Special Appearance” of our Youth Award Winners and enjoyed our “Mystery Sunrise Cocktail”.

Want to see all the fun – Click here for photos to view and download!

An Award-winning reporter, Anne Hillerman brings together modern mystery, Navajo traditions, & the evocative landscape of the desert Southwest in her intriguing entry in the Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito series. Her newest addition, Cave of Bones was released April 3rd – just in time for you to have your copy signed by the Author at the lunch.

Learn more about Anne below:

Anne grew up in New Mexico and worked as a writer, arts editor and editorial page editor for The Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper and the Albuquerque Journal. Her father, Tony Hillerman was best known for his Leaphorn and Chee mystery novels. After her father’s death in 2008, Anne continued the mysteries with Spider Woman’s Daughter, Rock With Wings and Song of the Lion, all New York Times best sellers.

Continuing a Legacy – Spider Woman’s Daughter is a hit!

Spider Woman’s Daughter. The book continues the adventures of Navajo officers Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn, and gives Officer Bernadette Manuelito a chance to share the spotlight. Check out the book trailer! The book debuted at Number 10 on the New York Times Bestseller list and has been a popular read. It is also a finalist for the wonderful Dilys Award, given annually by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association to the mystery titles of the year which the member booksellers have most enjoyed selling.

Spider Woman’s Daughter wins Spur Award

“I was thrilled to get a call from the president of the esteemed group Western Writers of America letting me know that my mystery was being honored with the 2014 Spur Award for Best First Novel. The award is especially meaningful because I know there were many, many fine books submitted for the honor. And because the Spur was among the awards my Dad treasured the most. You can read more here.

Reviewer Quotes of Anne Hillerman books:
“Hillerman seamlessly blends tribal lore and customs into a well-directed ploit, continuing the spirit of her father, Tony, by keeping his characters (like Chee) in the mix, but still establishing Manuelito as the main player in what has become a fine legacy series” – Booklist

All readers will enjoy reading The Song of the Lion cover to cover….it will take the reader on a journey to an unshakable, soul-deeping, life enhancing awareness.” – Midwest Book Review

*The luncheon today was fabulous!!! It was one of the best I have attended. – Nancy Powers
*Sheila, today was such a fun event. I arrived early to have a look round at the participating vendors … I was certainly impressed by the caliber of what the vendors brought to our meeting. The meal was also a delight. Jeanette Coggins has somehow been able to greatly improve the menus, quality of the meals, and much better service. Liz Farrell gave us some laughs and universal issues to consider in our journey on this earth. Bravo to the many who made today a great success. Keep the “Sparkle” alive. – Sheila Corbett

December 7, 2017 Luncheon Highlights

We kicked off the celebration of the holiday season with WAHHI ! – at the Sonesta Resort December 7th for the best holiday festivities on the island!

WAHHI and the Arts Center of Coastal Carolinas brought you a Premiere Week Showing of Broadway’s smash hit musical, Newsies!

Newsies is a Tony Award-winning play set in New York City at the turn of the century. It is a rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged “newsies”, who dream of a better life far from the streets.

During our Social Hour we were entertained by the Hilton Head High School string section while we enjoy our festive drink special – New York Cosmo.

TOYS TOYS TOYS were brought by WAHHI Members & Guests to local children in need.  This benefited Children at the Children’s Center and stocked the Deep Well Christmas Shop where parents in need are allowed to choose a gift for their child.
